The Fianna Fáil nominee dropped out of Ireland's presidential race just weeks ahead of the election

Fianna Fáil candidate Jim Gavin stated he is pulling out from the race for Ireland's head of state with "immediate effect".

He was scheduled to be one of three candidates competing for Ireland's head of state, alongside Independent candidate Catherine Connolly and Fine Gael's Heather Humphreys.

However, late Sunday he announced via a statement he had "made a mistake that was not in keeping with my character and the standards he upholds."

"After weighing these points, I've resolved to exit the presidential election contest right away and reunite with my loved ones," he said via a statement.
