The Latest Mayhem Mounts Update Introduces a Stunningly Wild New Spear to the Game

The winter content update for the block-building phenomenon has arrived — and it features the initial fresh armament added to the game since the heavy club made its debut. The spear is now available and it might just revolutionize your approach to Minecraft, particularly when you thrive on pandemonium.

An Armament Designed for Chaotic Rides

The Mayhem Mounts drop also adds a host of fresh elements and updates focused on animal mounts in the game. That central theme made the spear the natural choice for this release, as the development team had already known it was time for a fresh combat tool.

"We knew initially that we aimed for a new weapon that would add some more range, and we envisioned it for mounted combat," explained a lead developer. "We tried out a few different ideas, but the lance was the one that both played wonderfully when we tested our prototypes and also looked good for the use case."

If you're curious whether fighting from a saddle means you can charge at your allies on steeds, the answer is a resounding yes. In fact, there's even an combat move perfectly suited for it.

"[Jousting on horses is one of the biggest functions for the spear, and it's incredibly enjoyable," the developer continues. "The spear has a dual attack system: You have the quick stab, where you pierce your enemy. But you also have a powerful lance where you couch your lance and deal increased harm [with] the more pace you have. So [it’s] tailor-made for knightly combat."

Aerial Mayhem & Deep-Sea Exploration

The chaotic fun can extend beyond there, though. If you're far enough into the game that you've been to The End, the developers have an delightfully absurd idea. "If you are in the end-game, [spears are] perfect for equipping the wings and flying forth and creating genuine chaos," she suggests.

In other words: Aerial lance combat is now real, and it needs to become an competitive event immediately.

Another significant inclusion in this latest drop is the Nautilus. This aquatic being, which is inspired by the nautilus shells found in-game for years, can be tamed and ridden for deep-sea journeys. Not only will it transport you through the water more swiftly than swimming, it'll also conserve your air supply, so there's no requirement to return to the surface for a breath.

The other inclusions are mostly things that want to kill you, as is the nature of Minecraft. Unsurprisingly, there's also a zombie Nautilus spawning in the water, often with a zombie villager on its back. If you succeed in take care of the Drowned, though, you can tame the zombie Nautilus — or the regular one, for that matter — with a spiky fish.

"We've long considered this challenge on and off, and again, like with the spear and [adding] more mounts, it seemed like the ideal opportunity to also unveil something for aquatic environments," the developer elaborates. "For the Nautilus specifically, we had a few different ideas for sea mounts that we wanted to test, but the Nautilus design sketches looked compelling, and we have the link to the Nautilus shell that was found within the game."

She also adds that there are actually a pair of variants of zombie Nautilus: regular and coral zombie Nautilus. "[The variants] provide diversity to what you encounter underwater."

Desert Dangers and Long-Awaited Tweaks

Other additions include the sun-proof skeletons, biome-specific skeletons that can endure the sun, which means there's no refuge from them if you venture in that region. Sometimes you'll see them on desiccated dromedaries, another new mob. These passive, zombified camels have an notable look that sees their bones protruding. The same goes for undead steeds, who have a comparable rib-popping design and can sometimes be spawned in the darkness with a lance-wielding undead rider on their back.

The final pair of items on the drop's list are minor quality-of-life improvements, including some much-anticipated tweaks to equestrian travel. Now, you can traverse bodies of water while riding a horse. Also, netherite horse armor is now craftable at the crafting table, so you can give your horse the ultimate protection it is worthy of.

A Spicy Send-Off for the Year

All told, the year-end release of the year is a pretty good one. The spear on its own — and the potential for chaos — would have constituted a major improvement. Add in the Nautilus, and more things trying to kill you, and Minecraft's definitely getting a touch more chaotic.

The Mayhem Mounts content drop is out now for all major editions of Minecraft.
