The Liverpool legend in the running for Rangers comeback after Martin is sacked.
Steven Gerrard is being strongly considered for a surprise reappointment to the Scottish giants following the confirmed sacking of manager the ex-Swansea boss.
Martin's disastrous spell at Rangers ends
Martin's ill-fated Ibrox tenure concluded with the gaffer exiting the the away venue via a side door and a waiting car after a share of the points which left the Glasgow side eleven points adrift from the top of the Scottish Premiership after just seven games.
Incensed supporters had surrounded the Rangers team bus in the away ground, making their feelings clear.
Club hierarchy unwilling to part with Martin
The Ibrox hierarchy had been hesitant to let go of the former Swansea boss, who was only brought in in last month, despite loud protests from supporters.
However, there was an understanding that the manager's position had become untenable.
Rangers have secured just a single victory of their league fixtures to date, which has been coupled with dismal showings on the continental stage.
In total, Martin managed only five wins of 17 competitive matches, with a uninspiring, unclear footballing philosophy that gained little support.
“Even though changeovers need patience, performances have not met the club’s expectations,” announced a club announcement on the weekend.
“Deputy manager the assistant, and first-team staff member the coach, will also be moving on. Martin and his staff have given their all throughout their spell. We are grateful for their efforts and wish them well for the future.”
The former manager secured the championship with Rangers
Gerrard won the title with the Ibrox side in 2020-21, their only championship since 2011.
His performance in the Scottish league before then, combined with setbacks at the Birmingham club, creates uncertainty about his coaching abilities.
Yet he is highly regarded by the very fanbase the team desperately need back on side.
The reappointment of the former Reds star, who last managed in Saudi Arabia, would prove hugely popular.
Gerrard will also be conscious of what scarce chances he has to be a gaffer in significant leagues.
The sacking will heighten focus on Kevin Thelwell
The coaching change will intensify scrutiny on Kevin Thelwell, the club's recruitment chief.
He had been strongly in favor of the manager while announcing a investment of £20m in the summer window.
The ex-manager had agreed to a long-term deal.
The coach's earlier positions
The coach, who had previously coached MK Dons and the Welsh club, led the south coast club to promotion to the English football's elite in the previous season after being brought in the prior offseason.
He was dismissed last December after the Saints secured just a single victory of their first 16 games.
He was chosen as Barry Ferguson’s replacement in last month, after the caretaker boss had replaced the fired the former manager in winter.
