The UK authorities has included an additional eleven further nations to its public alert list regarding the threats of toxic alcohol poisoning from contaminated alcoholic drinks.

The revised warning now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after reports of "a worldwide rise in the number of documented incidents" of industrial alcohol contamination.

Just a few weeks ago, the government had previously added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current roster, in response to several high-profile incidents including the tragic loss of 6 visitors in Laos in 2024.

Travellers are being cautions that even minimal doses of toxic alcohol can result in permanent eye damage or death within 12 to 48 hrs.

Exactly what is Methanol and In what way is it Used?

Toxic alcohol is a poisonous chemical typically used in antifreeze, windshield wiper fluid, and paint solvent. It is not meant for ingestion.

While it is naturally produced during the production of spirits, licensed producers lower it to non-dangerous concentrations for human consumption through the distillation process.

But in various destinations, it is surreptitiously added into spirits to reduce expenses, and as it is flavorless and smell-free, it is very difficult to detect.

Authorities' Guidance for Travelers

Government minister a senior official emphasized that every traveler should be aware of the symptoms of industrial alcohol contamination.

"If you're having drinks abroad, choose trusted places and refrain from unlicensed drinks or free shots," Falconer warned.

"If something seems unusual, for example a fatigue that's much more severe than typical or vision problems – get medical help right away."

The entire roster of destinations noted as posing a risk of methanol toxicity presently covers: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
